Business Coach vs. Mentor: Which One Do I Actually Need?
If you have ever typed “business coach or mentor?” into Google at 11pm, you are not alone. I hear this question all the time, and honestly, it’s a fair one. The two words get thrown around as if they mean the same thing, and when you are already unsure about your business, one more confusing choice is the last thing you need.
So let’s sit down with a coffee and sort it out together.
What a coach actually does
A coach asks questions. Good ones, the kind that make you pause and say “hm, I hadn’t thought about it that way.” A coach does not tell you what to do. Instead, she creates the space for you to understand what you need, what you want and what is really holding you back.
Coaching is wonderful when the main block sits inside you: self-doubt, the feeling of not being good enough, worries that nobody will want to spend money on what you offer. The answers are already in you, and the right questions help you find them.
What a mentor actually does
A mentor works with you in a much more hands-on, guided way. This is where we take your real, practical questions and answer them together. How should your website be structured? What does your SEO need? How does your newsletter system work? What should your funnel look like, and which parts of it can be automated so you are not doing everything by yourself?
A mentor does not only ask. She shows, builds and walks next to you until it works.
Where the line gets blurry
Here is the honest part: there is no hard border between the two. Business strategy is the best example. A good strategy conversation needs the questions of a coach and the experience of a mentor, often in the same hour. If anyone tells you it is always one or the other, be a little careful.
A story I see again and again
A while ago, a woman came to me for coaching. Like many women I work with, she had started her business with a big dream, and after some time she realized things were not going the way she had hoped. Her self-worth had taken a hit, and she was missing guidance and community.
She expected that talking and big questions would be the answer, and they were a huge part of it. We worked on her self-confidence and self-belief, and that changed how she showed up.
But here is what she had not realized: her business system needed to change too. Her website needed an overhaul, her SEO needed real, deep work, and her day-to-day needed automations so she was no longer carrying everything alone. No amount of mindset work could replace that. And no website rebuild could have replaced the confidence she gained.
She needed both, and that is very common.
About the "fomo" phrase: i'll help you make 6-figures!
I want to say this clearly, because it matters: there is no magic sentence that turns you into a six-figure business owner.
“I’ll coach you to six figures” is a promise that plays on shiny object syndrome. It sounds exciting for a moment and leaves you more discouraged afterwards. Building a business takes time, dedication, commitment and consistency. It takes self-belief, knowledge, and the will to keep learning.
That is why I build businesses sustainably, over a longer period of time, with numbers that go steadily upwards. It is less glamorous than a crash course promise, but it is the version that lasts.
How to find out what you need
Here are a few questions to ask yourself, ideally with a cup of tea and a notebook:
Where am I on my journey right now? Just starting out, finding your footing, or ready to grow?
What am I struggling with most at the moment? Is it a feeling (doubt, overwhelm, comparison) or a thing (a website that does not work, no newsletter, no system)?
Where do I want to be in one year? Be as specific as you can.
How is my mindset today? Are you in the middle of self-doubt, or in the strongest mental state you have had so far?
If your answers lean towards feelings and clarity, coaching will likely be your starting point. If they lean towards systems, tech and structure, mentoring is probably what you need. If it is a mix, which is very often the case, you do not have to choose just one.
Not sure? Let’s look at it together
